7 Day China Itinerary 2026: Beijing, Xi’an & Shanghai

Seven days in China is enough for the classic three-city route: Beijing (Great Wall + Forbidden City), Xi’an (Terracotta Warriors + city wall) and Shanghai (The Bund + French Concession). This itinerary is the most popular first-time China route for good reason — it covers ancient history, Silk Road culture and modern urban China in one connected journey. All three cities are linked by high-speed rail. This guide gives you a complete day-by-day plan, realistic timing, transport details and booking advice.

What is the best 7-day itinerary for China?

Day 1 — Arrive Beijing Arrive and check in. If you arrive early enough: evening walk along Wangfujing pedestrian street (王府井步行街) for street food and first impressions. Jet lag adjustment day — keep it light.

Day 2 — The Great Wall Full day. Take the tourist bus or join a tour to Mutianyu (慕田峪) — the best all-round section for most visitors (cable car, less crowded than Badaling, beautiful forested setting). Allow 2–3 hours on the wall. Return to Beijing in the afternoon; evening in the Houhai bar street area.

💡 Book the Great Wall: No advance booking needed for Mutianyu, but go early (by 9am) to beat tour groups. Cable car tickets at the site: approximately ¥120 return.

Day 3 — Forbidden City + Temple of Heaven + Hutongs Morning: Forbidden City (故宫) — book tickets online in advance, they sell out on weekends. Allow 3 hours. Tiananmen Square is immediately adjacent. Afternoon: Temple of Heaven (天坛) — 1–2 hours. Evening: explore hutong lanes — hire a pedicab for a guided tour or walk independently around Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷).

Day 4 — High-Speed Train to Xi’an Morning: pack and check out. Take the G-train to Xi’an (approximately 4.5 hours, departs from Beijing West Station). Arrive early afternoon. Check in and walk to the Muslim Quarter (回民街) for dinner — biang biang noodles and lamb skewers.

Day 5 — Terracotta Warriors + City Wall Morning: Terracotta Warriors (兵马俑) — take Bus 306 from near the railway station (1 hour, ¥9) or Didi (¥80–100). Allow 3 hours including the museum. Afternoon: return to Xi’an. Climb the Ancient City Wall (古城墙) — rent a bicycle and cycle the full 14km circuit (¥45, 1.5–2 hours). Evening: Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) fountain show.

Day 6 — Train/Flight to Shanghai Option A: High-speed train Xi’an → Shanghai (approximately 6.5 hours, comfortable, book in advance). Option B: Fly Xi’an → Shanghai (approximately 2 hours — faster but airport time reduces the saving). Arrive Shanghai afternoon/evening. Walk the Bund at night.

Day 7 — Shanghai Morning: Yu Garden (豫园) + Old Town (arrive before 9am). Soup dumplings at Nanxiang. Afternoon: French Concession — Tianzifang, Wukang Road, coffee. Evening: Bund views from Pudong side, or Shanghai Tower observation deck (book in advance). Depart evening or next morning.
