Guilin Travel Guide 2026: Li River, Rice Terraces & Yangshuo

Guilin is the landscape that appears on China’s 20-yuan banknote — and it lives up to the image. Limestone karst peaks rise vertically from flat rice paddies and the winding Li River, creating scenery that feels almost too perfect to be real. The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of the most beautiful journeys in Asia. The Longji Rice Terraces are some of the world’s most photogenic agricultural landscapes. And the small town of Yangshuo is ideal for cycling, rock climbing and a few extra days of relaxed exploration.

Is the Li River cruise worth it?

Yes — the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of the genuinely unmissable experiences in China. The 83km journey takes 4–5 hours and passes through a continuous procession of karst peaks, bamboo groves, small fishing villages and buffalo wading in the shallows. The scenery matches — and in places exceeds — the famous images on the currency.

Practical details:

  • Boats depart from the Zhujiang Pier (竹江码头) or Mopanshan Pier (磨盘山码头), not from central Guilin — factor in 30–45 minutes’ travel from the city
  • Tickets: approximately ¥210–310 depending on boat class (2026 rates). Book through your hotel or at the pier — avoid unofficial touts
  • The cruise ends in Yangshuo, where you can spend 1–2 days before returning to Guilin or continuing your journey
  • Best on clear or lightly overcast days — the mist adds atmosphere but heavy rain obscures the peaks

Budget alternative: The public ferry (about ¥70) offers a similar route at lower cost but with fewer comfortable facilities. Or take the high-speed train to Yangshuo (30 minutes) and do the journey in reverse by local boat or bamboo raft on a shorter section of the river.

What are the Longji Rice Terraces and how do I visit?

The Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) Rice Terraces are carved into the mountainsides of Longsheng County, about 2 hours by bus from Guilin. They’re considered some of the most beautiful rice terraces in the world — and have been cultivated for more than 650 years.

Two main areas:

  • Ping’an village (平安寨) — closest to the entrance, easiest access, good viewing platforms including “Seven Stars Accompany the Moon” and “Nine Dragons and Five Tigers”
  • Dazhai village (大寨) — slightly further, more scenic, includes the famous “Golden Buddha” viewing platform with the best panoramic terrace views

Best times to visit:

  • May — terraces filled with water, mirror-like reflections of the sky
  • June–September — deep green, lush vegetation
  • October — harvest season, golden yellow terraces
  • December–February — if there’s snow, the snow-covered terraces are extraordinary (but access can be limited)

How to get there: Direct bus from Guilin bus station (about ¥25, 2 hours) or join a day tour from Guilin or Yangshuo. Accommodation is available in village guesthouses if you want to stay overnight and catch sunrise/sunset — highly recommended.

What is Yangshuo like and how long should I stay?

Yangshuo is a small town where the Li River ends its scenic journey — and it has developed into an excellent base for exploring the surrounding karst countryside. The town itself is touristy (West Street/西街 is full of bars and restaurants catering to international travellers) but the surrounding landscape is extraordinary.

What to do in Yangshuo:

  • Cycling — Rent a bicycle (¥20–30/day) and explore the valleys between the karst peaks. The route along the Yulong River (遇龙河) past ancient bridges and water buffalo is one of the great easy cycling routes in Asia.
  • Rock climbing — Yangshuo has become one of China’s premier rock climbing destinations with routes at every level. Several guide companies offer half- and full-day sessions.
  • Yulong River bamboo rafting — A gentler alternative to the main Li River cruise. Shallow river, close-up karst peaks, very photogenic.
  • Cooking class — Several restaurants in Yangshuo offer half-day cooking classes in Guilin-style cuisine. A good rainy-day activity.

How long to stay: 2–3 days in Yangshuo is ideal. Enough time for the Li River cruise arrival, a cycling day and a bamboo raft.

Is Guilin worth visiting?

Yes — Guilin’s karst landscape is one of the most visually extraordinary in the world and unlike anything else in China. The combination of the Li River cruise, Yangshuo cycling and Longji Rice Terraces makes this one of the best nature-focused itineraries in Asia. Allow 3–5 days for the full experience.

When is the best time to visit Guilin?

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal. The rice terraces are best in May (water reflections) and October (harvest gold). Avoid the peak of June’s rainy season when river levels can be too high for the scenic route and mountain visibility is poor.

How do I get from Guilin to Yangshuo?

Three options: the Li River cruise (4–5 hours, most scenic, ¥210–310), the high-speed train (30 minutes, ¥21.5), or a public bus (1.5 hours, ¥20). Most first-time visitors do the cruise one way (Guilin to Yangshuo) and take the train back.
